A RACE OF SOLIDARITY AMID LIGHT, ROCK, AND GRAPEVINES
Registration is open for the vertical race through the Illuminated Nativity of Mario Andreoli.
A part of the registration fee will be donated to the Manarola Foundation for safeguarding the terraced landscape.
Saturday 10 December 2016, in Manarola, municipality of Riomaggiore, in the Cinque Terre in Liguria, the first edition of Sciacchetrail VERTICAL Race will be held, a semi-nocturnal UISP race in ascent, organized by ASD Cinque Terre and Cinque Terre Trekking: the time trial will start at 3pm, from the marina of Manarola to the Hill of Three Crosses, with intervals of 1 minute between athletes.
The vertical race of 700 meters, with 165 meters of positive elevation gain, is short but with a high level of emotion, both for the technical aspects and the landscape and symbolic value: the start is from the sea and then winds up through the village; the first part passes among the boats parked along the main street lined with the famous pastel houses, to the steep staircase of the “Collora”.
After 300 stairs in stone, irregular and steep – immersed in the grand Illuminated Nativity of Mario Andreoli – through terraced vineyards, sea and sky, at twilight you reach the arrival arch at the top of the Hill of Three Crosses.
The perfect setting to start another extraordinary spectacle: the lighting of the largest illuminated nativity in the world symbolically entrusted to the 100 runners.
The suggestive work of Christmas land art is created on the same terraced fields that the Manarola Foundation is trying to save from abandonment through a recovery project of the dry stone walls and traditional grapevine cultivation methods.
As it is in the spirit of ASD Cinque Terre, to unite sport, landscape and community, a part of the registration fee of the Sciacchetrail VERTICAL Race, will be donated by the sports association to the ManarolaFoundation for the recovery of the dry stone walls of this extraordinary terraced amphitheater.
Registration is open via MySdam at the price of 25 € on the website http://vertical.sciacchetrail.com or at the shopCinque Terre Trekking in Manarola – includes: a gift bag offered by the sponsors, a donation certificate from the Manarola Foundation and the post-race festivities organized by the locals of Manarola.
The kids will also have their trail: The MINI MANA TRAIL, alone or with parents, Saturday 10 December, starting at 2pm, with post-race snack. (free with reservation).
The event is organized thanks to the partnership with Consorzio In Manarola, Manarola Foundation, UISP and CAI La Spezia and the patronage of Region of Liguria, Cinque Terre National Park and the Municipality of Riomaggiore.
